By offering an affordable and fast business establishment process and lower tax rates than in neighbouring nations, the British country has historically been a business hub, many of which have had great relevance on the international scene. In this article, I show some successful companies born in the UK.

Successful Bank Companies Born in the UK

The United Kingdom, more specifically, the City of London, has historically been a hub of banking entities. This is mainly due to lax regulations that have permitted to attract talent and capital from neighbouring countries. Some of the major British banks are Barclays, HSBC or Lloyds.

However, in the mid-2010s, new banks appeared. Unlike the previous cases, these operate exclusively on the internet. In addition, they tried to offer a simpler and more transparent user experience, to integrate new functionalities and technologies into their applications and to eliminate the inefficiencies in all banking processes. Due to these factors, they have managed to expand their customer base exponentially.

The case of Monzo is especially striking. Regarded as the best-rated online entity, it broke several fundraising speed records. In this article, I explain its history in more detail. Other relevant digital banks in the UK are Revolut or Starling Bank.

Successful Automotive Companies Born in the UK

The automotive sector has been a major driver of the British economy since the origins of the car in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Even today, it remains as one of the largest sources of employment and export of UK products. It is especially relevant in the luxury car niche, with brands such as Bentley, Aston Martin, McLaren or the three listed below.

Rolls-Royce

Charles Rolls and Henry Royce founded Rolls-Royce in 1904. Its production mainly focuses on cars, and its name gets associated with wealth and exclusivity. One of its best-known models was the Phantom IV. Rolls-Royce only manufactured 18 units between 1950 and 1956, and the company only sold the car to heads of state and members of royal families.

In addition, it expanded its business activity to the production of aircraft engines and turbines, becoming a leader in this sector.

Lotus

The engineer Colin Chapman created Lotus in 1952. The main characteristic of Lotus’ cars is that they prioritise a weight and dimensions reduction rather than an engine that offers a greater power. Some of the company’s more famous models are the Elise or the Evora.

This firm gained its fame as a result of its participation in the Formula 1 championship between 1958 and 1994. During this journey, they won 7 championships and Chapman himself designed many of the winning cars, such as the Lotus 49 or the 77.

It is worth mentioning that Lotus was involved in the development of the famous DeLorean DLC.

Land Rover

Land Rover is the best known 4×4 vehicle manufacturing corporation. Its owners established the company in 1978, although since 1949 the enterprise has built cars.

Some of its most famous models are the Land Rover Discovery or the Range Rover. Nonetheless, in the present day, its directors modified the production to high-end SUV-style cars.

Successful Companies Born in the UK: Deliveroo

Will Shu founded this food delivery company in 2013. This person, who was previously a banker, saw a lack of quality food delivery alternatives in London. Since then, Deliveroo has expanded to more than 12 countries and 200 cities.

Its business model works as follows. It allows restaurants to create a profile on their platform and offer their products to customers. Once they have placed an order, a Deliveroo employee will go to the restaurant to pick up the shipment and take it to the consumer’s address. In this way, restaurants will not have to spend resources on their own home ordering infrastructure. Of course, the app will charge a percentage of the final price of each product.

In ukstartcompany, you will find information about how to establish, register and operate companies with different legal structures and business activities in the UK.
